Types of ComputersAuthor : Pandu Ranga Rao N

When the term computer was invented, people used to watch it, with a different look. But, today, computers have become very essential part of our daily life. Today's super fast computer can somehow dominate over even human brain !!!... Do you know, a real fact about the super computer?... The super computer Deep Blue created the history by winning the chess game against Garry Kasparov, the then world champion in chess!!!...

When we speak about types of computers, based on its reliability, capacity and physical structure, it has been divided into four major types, during early days.

Micro computers :

Personal computers, Laptops and most common known computers are all come under microcomputers. Microcomputers are most commonly used computers in homes, schools, offices and etc. Rather than PC and Laptops, Tablet PC, Smartphone’s, PDA’s, carputers, Ditto’s are all other computers which are all known as Microcomputers.

Mainframe computers :

These computers are large expensive computers, which are mainly used by the governmental departments or by the large organizations, where they need to perform bulk mathematical computations or to execute complex applications.

Mini computers :

This is a computer which is no longer much used and it is an intermediate between Microcomputers and Mainframe computers. These computers are mainly used by general business applications and by the department level operations in the larger organizations.

Super computers :

As name indicates, supercomputers are the computers whose rate speed will be super. Supercomputers are mainly used at the research centers for intense numerical calculations such as weather forecasting, fluid dynamics, nuclear simulations, theoretical astrophysics, and complex scientific computations.

But, today, the entire scenario got changed due to competition among companies to bring out the latest technology systems. Every fortnight, there will be new release of new technologies and also release of devices which supports that technology. Today we just saw 1 TB hard disks, but, tomorrow there will be a hard disk with a capacity of several TB’s.

Today’s computing world normally looks into 3 basic types of computers.

Desktop computers :

These computers are usual computer systems which consist of CPU or System box, Keyboard, mouse, Monitor, which are kept on a desk or on a table. These computers do have external wiring to connect required devices to the CPU box. They use external power source from a wiring that normally connects to the external Un-interrupted Power Supply (UPS).

Laptop computers :

These computers are systems which are easily carry able. These computers are mostly used by business executives for presenting their product through the computers. These computers have got separate motherboards and memory cards meant for it only. They are of less weight, and have LCD or LED screen for displaying purposes. The costs of the laptops are slight higher than the desktop, because of its easy mobility. They are also called as Note Book computers.

Netbook computers :

Very recently, it is found that, laptops do cost more unnecessarily for a home user who uses his laptop only for net browsing only. As a result, a less featured version of laptop was created. They are called as “NetBook” computers. They are smaller in size than the Laptops. Netbook components do differ from the components of a laptop. They do have LCD or LED screens which are similar to laptop but, do smaller in size. Processor manufacturers Intel have released Atom Processors which are meant only for NetBooks. They do cost lesser than the laptops. But, computer techies don’t prefer to buy a “netbook” because, they don’t open development environments faster. Also, the other reason is that the “Netbook” storage space is lesser, when compared to the “Notebook” computer.
