Anatomy of Website DevelopmentAuthor : Pandu Ranga Rao N

The word “Internet” is a popular term, all over the globe, today. The term website is a place holder where one can share his information from anywhere across the globe. If one puts up his/her details in a website, then the details will be made available to everyone who visits the website. A web browser is needed to go through the contents which are put up on the website.

There are four things which you should consider before you place an order for your own websites.

  1. Look
  2. Contents
  3. Domain Purchasing
  4. Domain Renewal

The first thing “Look” is all about design. It is the design which gets the customer, an impressive feeling. The design should well express your products which you are going to create value in the market. Normally, there are two designs; Home Page and Inner page design. For a sales website, home page design will be applied to all other pages. However, it is decided by the customer who places order for website. The design gives an idea for preparing contents as it defines exclusively the look for the website.

After the design, plan “contents”, decide what content should go where etc. Prepare contents, get the contents to be typed and get it placed on the web pages.

There are normally two kinds of web pages; Static and Dynamic. Static pages deliver the information contents in the page itself. For Example, Dynamic pages will read the information contents from database and displays the same. Dynamic pages are needed whenever the information is going to change regularly.

There will be three types of charges for development of website; charge for design, charge for developing web pages by importing design into web pages, putting up the contents. There will be separate charge for developing dynamic pages as these involve various queries and other complex statements.

In between design and planning the contents, one should get “domain name”. This name will identify your business globally. You need to tell your domain name when asked by the internet savvy customer. You can print the domain name on visiting cards of your business. The domain name consists of two parts which is separated by a dot. First part represents name of your choice and the second part represents the extension. Example, for icantech.in, the name is icantech and in is the extension. You can get .com, .net, .in, .biz, .co.in, .co.uk, etc. as extensions. The domain registration and host plan rates also depends on the extension which you choose for the domain name. For example, .com extension is the most popularly used extension and it is the highest rated extension among the set of extensions available now.

After choosing the domain name, make sure that, the domain name is available or not. The domain name might have taken by someone else. At that time, you will have an option of choosing alternate domain name or same domain name with some other extension. For example, if icantech.com is already been taken, go for icantech.in or icantech.co.in.

After taking domain name, you need to choose, type of hosting. The type of hosting depends on the server sided scripting which you are going to execute. There are two types of server sided scripting which is dominating today’s world of internet. They are based on two server platforms, namely, the Linux and the Windows. The choice of this depends on the creation of dynamic pages. If one needs to use .NET, Active Server Pages then he has to choose Windows based server for hosting. If one wants PHP, CGI, Perl etc. then he need to choose Linux based hosting. The price of windows server is quite high compared to Linux because; Windows is a closed source operating system and requires paying some licensing fees while purchasing the same. But, on the other hand, Linux servers are being developed on open sources which waivers out the licensing fees. Only maintenance cost must be paid by the owners of the Linux servers.

The onetime charge for registering the domain name and the domain maintenance charges will need to be paid. The domain “maintenance” charges will have to be paid yearly. There are several schemes and offers available for the domain registration and domain hosting maintenance. Some offer unlimited space for hosting. It is better to opt for unlimited space as one can keep uploading new things in the server. The domain registration charges usually depend on the extensions which the domain name uses. The commonly used extensions are .com, .net, .org, .edu, .in, .biz, .co.in, .co.uk, etc.

After the purchase of domain name and hosting space, the customer of the domain name will get a user name and password and other settings which are related for accessing the domain name. The process of file transfer from local system into domain name space is known as “Uploading” and will be done by the programmer, to whom one will forward the user name, password and related settings.

From now on, the website will become readable and viewable to all internet viewers across the world.
