For the Internet world, the far most-used service is the World Wide Web. Now, a days, this facility has become a house-hold name. Once, you start browsing on the Internet, you may feel crazy to create your own web pages for your business, to share what you do, where to approach you etc. For creating such pages, you need to know, basically a programming terminology cum programming language, known as HTML.

HTML is a standard language meant for website development activities. HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. The language is simple to understand and learn. You don’t have to invest much for learning HTML. A computer with capability to run notepad and web browsers like Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Opera etc. is enough for it to run. You don’t have to be online for simple html pages to load through web browsers.

Well, now, let us see how HTML originated during the end of last century, by whom it became popular etc.

The real big advancement in ease of use for the Internet was, when Tim Berners-Lee invented the term world-wide-web in early 1990. He invented HTML, which went on to become internet world’s very basic language, as scientists all over the world wanted to share a lot of information in different formats, graphs and raw data. HTML allowed a variety of data to be integrated seamlessly and allowed links between data situated anywhere on the internet. The real breakthrough came, when Marc Anderson of Illinois developed a World Wide Web browser called Mosaic. It could use the Internet without having to learn a complex set of commands, which were existed at that time.

This browser also provided a more colorful and interesting interface to the Internet. Mosaic was later known as Netscape Navigator. Recently, you can select from a wide range of browsers to choose from.

Hyper Text, in the term “Hyper Text Markup Language”, is something like a reference book. You want to refer to a word and you will search for the word and read then more reference in the page you go to the page indicated. The hyper text is also something like that. Here reference is a link. This link may be in the same page same site or may be in a different page or in a different site. The commands in HTML are known as tags. The tags actually define page appearance and the set of elements within the page.
